Bulldozers come in a variety of all kinds of builds and models but the one thing that never changes is the fact they always come in one of three general sizes; small, medium or large. Whether you’re hiring or buying, it’s very important you choose the right size for you, lest you be left with a dozer that simply cannot get the job done.
So here we are going to go over the general differences between the three sizes of dozer and outline what jobs each is best suited to.
THE SMALL DOZER
As the name suggests, the small dozer is perfect for smaller jobs. Any bulldozer under 100 horsepower is considered ‘small’.
These dozers are ideal for work on farms or within residential areas, doing jobs like light earthmoving or tree clearing. They are also typically used for finishing and grading on roads and driveways.
A small dozer is much lighter than other sizes, meaning they can be used in muddy conditions without sinking.
You’re going to best suited to this dozer if you;
- Don’t have a lot of experience with driving bulldozers,
- Are looking for something cheaper and more fuel-efficient,
- Are using it for smaller earthmoving jobs or a smooth finish.
THE MEDIUM DOZER
The medium dozer is generally the go-to for most jobs. Sitting in between the two sizes means they are more adaptable, rather than being suited to only one kind of job. A ‘medium’ dozer is categorized as being between 100 and 400 horsepower. This makes them up to 4 times more powerful than a small dozer, but still far more fuel-efficient and maneuverable than a large dozer.
A medium dozer can be used for all kinds of jobs. They can be used in residential jobs, doing things like earthmoving, landscaping and land clearing. Or they can be used in industrial jobs, working on construction or demolitions.
You’re going to best suited to this dozer if you;
- Have some experience driving bulldozers,
- Are able to afford a larger machine,
- Are using it for industrial jobs or larger residential jobs.
THE LARGE DOZER
Now, we bring out the big guns. The ‘large’ dozers are the heavyweights of the dozer world, with anything over 400 horsepower being considered in this category, with some models almost reaching 1000 horsepower!
A large dozer is generally the most expensive, both to buy and upkeep. You are most likely not going to be looking for these dozers if you are working on a home project, or within a residential area. However, they are perfect for larger industrial jobs, such as mining or construction jobs.
Something to keep in mind is, because of their massive weight and size, they are ideal for driving over rocky areas, while they most certainly cannot be used in muddy terrain without sinking.
A large dozer can only be operated by someone with extensive experience with machines, lest it lead to damage to property, the machine or even a person.
You’re going to best suited to this dozer if you;
- Have extensive experience driving bulldozers,
- Are using it for larger construction jobs such as highway construction, mining or larger demolition jobs,
- Are using it on rough or rocky terrain.
